LES VENDANGES! For those of you not familiar with the amount of back-breaking work involved in producing a glass of wine, Jinx and Valerie got a taste of this weekend. "les vendanges" is the grape picking and pressing that occurs at this time of year in the vineyards along Lake Geneva. We helped out in the small village of St. Saphorin, a village which is centuries-old, and where our aunt is the vice-mayor. Here Jinx is cutting the grapes, vine by vine, in the hot, hot sun.

The grapes are then placed in a large wooden contraption that is carried down to the wine press. It can weigh up to 80 kilos. In this photo you can see a couple of people carrying the grapes down to the village.

Here we are at the wine press. We had a taste of the fresh grape juice- delicious!!

While Jinx worked in the vineyards, Valerie helped her aunt cook meals for the workers (16 to 24 people came for the meals). We didn't serve hot dogs and fries here- people were treated to delicious gourmet meals. Here grandmaman gives Valerie a break while Katie takes her own little break.
